An Energy Audit encompasses a variety of technical testing procedures that take place throughout a building. Energy Audits reveal areas that require energy improvement, and looks at issues that concern life safety. An Energy Audit can help to determine what types of home improvement measures need to be taken to avoid having safety issues become life threatening.

A Typical Energy Audit Consists of the Following Procedures:

Constant Monitoring Of Carbon Monoxide Levels
When we arrive on location the first thing we do is turn on a device called a gas badge. The badge hooks onto our clothing and monitors carbon monoxide levels the entire time we are there. We also test furnaces, hot water heaters, and kitchen stoves. Any appliance with a flame has potential to produce carbon monoxide, so we need to test it to make sure it is safe.

Test All Combustion Appliances
That heat your home or building, such as your furnace or boiler. We test combustion appliances for efficiency and safe operation under different air pressures to make sure air is circulating throughout your home the way it should. We want to make sure that the air that needs to exit your home does so correctly and that the healthy air you need to breathe, is there for you too.

The Blower Door Test
Reveals how leaky or tight a building is. Using an infrared camera, along with the blower door test, allows us to see the full effects of air entering and exiting the building through the building envelope. While it is a somewhat complicated test to perform, we encourage homeowners to be present because results are easy to understand and the most revealing of all the tests we perform.

Besides testing combustion appliances and the blower door test, there are many other tests we perform. Prudent Living can usually satisfy the needs of any homeowner, depending on what they would like to accomplish, in an energy audit of their home.
